National Grid Electricity Transmission

Helping National Grid communicate their 5-year business plan to secure funding of up to £35 billion to 2030.

Challenge
The plan represented the most significant step forward in the electricity network in a generation. It is an ambitious plan, set to future proof the network with strategic capacity and flexibility for the longer term.

It will nearly double the amount of energy that can be transported around the country, support the electrification of the industries of today and tomorrow, create new jobs, and support inward investment for the UK. It was critical to communicate the business case to Ofgem to allow National Grid to deliver at the unprecedented scale and pace that is needed to meet the UK’s ambitious climate goals.

The T3 plan needed to speak to and resonate with multiple audiences, including: UK regulator, politicians, political advisers, policymakers, media, customers, colleagues, campaign and consumer groups.
Insight
The plan content was developed over several months by a large team of contributors and was being worked on right up to the submission deadline, so a flexible approach to version control and drafts was required.

It was highly complex and technical in nature, thus needed to be easy to navigate, tell a progressive and logical investment story and link to other elements of the submission such as eight regional reports, which went into more specific details.

National Grid had already launched their Great Grid upgrade campaign and programme, so we needed to integrate this external story with the plan. The creative concept needed to reframe National Grid as a progressive and innovative leader for the energy transition.
Solution
An overarching theme was created to create a campaign approach that could run not only across the published business and regional plans, but also link to webinar presentations, video and a bespoke website.

The creative design and execution stretched the brand guidelines in a way that started to reimagine National Grid as a forward-thinking brand. The visual articulation led with the end beneficiaries of the T3 plan and we evolved the tone of voice in line with the creative to be more succinct, remove duplication, demonstrate the confidence and humanity of the National Grid brand.

We worked at pace within a 5 week window including collaboration with the US and UK stakeholders. As the project progressed to its final stages, we had the NG communications team embedded at our studio to enable the finalisation of the reports for submission.

The overarching design concept communicated that National Grid is progressive and innovative. The T3 plan design and execution conveys: The full scale and scope of the ambition for the plan, demonstrating that NG are focused – on the needs of customers, consumers, communities, and wider society and that they are responsible and considerate – a force for good in the world.

The end result was a business plan which was easy to navigate, clear and concise in its design whilst being rich in information and visually enaging.

Using the design system from the main report we created a series of 8 regional business plans.

These documents were region specific and explained how funding and investment would be used to rejuvenate existing infrastructure and how it would impact the local communities and the UK as a whole.

A series of regional webinar events were held to engage with a variety of stakeholders to inform them of National grid’s plan for future investments, planned works and upgrades to the area.

We created an animated PPT presentation for all 8 regions, using new and existing assets from the reports.

We needed a design agency with the creativity to create a critical set of documents that illustrated and emphasised the change in direction that our business wants to take. We really appreciated the WPA team’s commitment to understanding our challenges and standing with us to resolve them. The team regularly went above and beyond to help us get to a high quality end product.
