Bringing a 10-year strategy to life

Challenge
Yorkshire Water is responsible for providing essential water services to over 5 million customers across the region. As part of a transformational change for the business, we helped launch Yorkshire Water’s 10-year strategy, communicating to over 8,000 employees as they all work towards delivering the new vision – ‘A thriving Yorkshire: right for customers, right for the environment.'
Insight
The water industry is experiencing a difficult period, facing adverse media coverage and many operational challenges. The organisation already had an amazing sense of pride and passion amongst colleagues, but engagement scores were declining post-pandemic. Yorkshire Water needed to re-engage and inspire colleagues to ensure they believed in the new strategy and saw a positive future ahead.
Solution
We used a storytelling approach to set the context, which enabled us to bring the strategy to life in a way colleagues could get on board with. We crafted a narrative and developed 'Drive to thrive' as the plan of how this strategy will be delivered - explaining what the next 5 years would look like. Launched initially to senior and people leaders, and then cascaded down to their teams, so everyone understood the vital role they would play in achieving the vision.

Launching the strategy

We developed a clear narrative and suite of communications to launch the strategy across the organisation, breaking down the core elements and messages. It was launched initially at series of internal events and the comms used to roll it out to all colleagues.

Drive to thrive

Once the strategy had landed, we developed ‘drive to thrive’ – the journey and detailed plan to deliver the strategy and reach the vision. We created an identity and visual look and feel, closely aligned to the brand guidelines, but re-imagined in a way that was future-looking and stood out amongst other internal communications.

 

Internal communications

The ‘drive to thrive’ plan was launched at an in-person event of 800 senior and people leaders. The narrative was told across a variety of digital and printed communications, and a series of workshops allowed people leaders to shape the plan for their teams and areas of the business.

Awards

The ‘drive to thrive’ awards recognise colleagues who embrace the plan and display one or more of the four Yorkshire Water behaviours, demonstrating their commitment to delivering the strategy. We created pre-award comms, bespoke awards, pin badges, certificates and branding at the event.

We created a toolkit of assets and guidelines for ‘drive to thrive’, giving people leaders the tools they require to communicate with their teams and ensure a consistent campaign look and feel across all communications.
